The Start-----A bit about The Cumbria Way
here's where it is
Arriving at Ulverston Station at the south end of the Lake District
Meeting up with Liz and Peter again
a Cumbrian sausage!
Day 1--leaving Ulverston
following the sign
so far it's flat going
through a farm yard
a different type of style here
the hills are appearing
down a lane
and through a field
a well earned rest on a decorative seat
heading up
another way over an old wall
the sky is getting darker
rain ahead
a meeting in the rain
lunch time sheltering from the elements
the heavens have cleared up
another style
map checking time
a tarn
getting near the end
brighter as we reach Coniston
end of day 1----the village of Coniston
Day2 in Coniston--off up "The Old Man of Coniston"
hopefully the mist will clear
A Youth Hostel nestled in the hills
still some mist on top of the hills
a hard slog up the scree--Coniston Waters in the distance
nearly at the top
looking back down
shelter at the top
we have a visitor
begging from Peter
what a pose; of course we didn't feed her
teaching her lamb bad habits
it's windy here on the ridge
onto the ridge
we can see the path ahead
I might get blown over the edge
on the way down again and less windy here
cottages for mountaineering clubs
The end of Day2---view from our room
Day3---leaving Coniston
on through fields again
the clouds are threatening again
into the woods
through a private garden
sheltering from the rain
a great sign!!
down a narrow lane behind the farmer
approaching a small village
a lazy sheep dog!
picking up lunch
lost sheep
more hills ahead for tomorrow
one cow calls the rest to order
our home for 2 nights---Dungeon Ghyill
Day 4--- off up to Langdale Pikes
a water crossing!
clambering over the rocks
mum and kid
rocks dropped from a helicopter for trail building
another world up here
looking back down
up another peak
more climbing
the highest point
more dropped bags of rock
endo of 4th day---- on the way down
Day 5---on our way again
the flat before the hilly
the start of Stake Pass
a wash in a cool stream
heading down to the river
a lone tree
the pub is visible at last
now we are in Rosswaite
we needed a shandy
lunch by a river
stepping stones
through some woods again
a quiet road
Derwent Waters
an interesting sculpture
the village just before Keswick, our next stop
the bridge into Keswick
nearly there
popular Keswick
End of 5th day--- a refreshing cup of char
Day 6-- a rest day
leaving our B&B to start Day 7.It's a stuffed dog!
English logging
looking back to Keswick
clear cut British style
not all walk up from the village
should be a nice day today
we'll overtake them soon
a great path upwards
looking back through the heather at a youth hostel
a welcome sight when bad weather
signing the book
a welcome seat
our next stop is down there
on the way down
the last gate before Caldbeck(home of John Peel)
end of 7th day----this is our B&B, --the 1st house in Caldbeck
Start of 8th day--stocking up in the village shop
leaving the village
woods again
Scot Pines
one of the Orchid family
bales of hay
this river will lead us to Carlisle
a 14th century church
following a truck of cows
some of their mates
another stairway in a wall
wool left by sheep
the river again
a last look at the hills
following the main rail line to Carlisle
Carlisle is near now
The End---we end the walk at Carlisle; tomorrow we start Hadrian's Wall
